Okay, all the Applications, Affidavits, and documents have been signed and served. You and your ex have traded paperwork back and forth. You’ve even managed to settle some of the issues between you. The clock is ticking down to your day in court and you’re ready.
Almost.
Family Court can be in-person or virtual, but whether you’re facing the Court through a screen on across a courtroom, there are protocols in place, rules that apply to behaviour and appearance.
More rules? I know, shocking, right?
First off, stand when the judge enters the courtroom, and remain standing until the registrar invites you to sit. If you are arguing a Motion, stand when you speak to the judge and when he/she speaks to you. Refer to the judge as “Your Honour.”
Second, don’t even think about taking a “selfie,” posting to Instagram, or Tweeting. What happens in Court, stays in Court.
Third, this is not the time to get creative in dress or speech. Ditch the day-glow coloured suits, the casual swearing, and any T-shirts blaring politically correct or incorrect slogans. Banker-Blah is the way to go. Think decorum, dignity.
Don’t wear sunglasses, don’t chew gum, don’t eat in the courtroom, and do not interrupt the judge.
Fourth, Be On Time. The Court may be running late, but you can’t.
